Fourth semester (Spring 2024)

Artefact 5

As an artefact for writing, I include an extract analysis from Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The analysis was based on an extract from the book of our choosing. I picked a moment when Dr. Frankenstein successfully animates the creature. Even though there were some spelling mistakes, I obtained a good evaluation, according to which my paper was direct and to the point, which was my goal.

Artefact 6

Next, I have chosen the response paper on The Picture of Dorian Gray. In the paper I listed the topics that this book in my opinion addresses and chose to explore in depth how Lord Henry in a way seduces Dorian. I attempted to accompany my reasoning with the textual evidence. The evaluation was brief but positive.

Third semester (2023)

1)

As my first artefact I include a forum contribution that I wrote to my seminar group forum in the course English online. The topic is reading, I wrote about books I like, about my reading habits and whether books are becoming obsolete. I was awarded 7 points instead of usual 5 which I appreciate very much.

I love and I’ve always loved reading. Ever since I learned to read, I could be found anytime of the day with a book in my hands. When I was younger, I read almost anything, now I’m more choosy. One of my reading habits is to read the same book more than once. I usually wait until I forget some of the content in order to be still a bit surprised. Recently, I’ve discovered the book series Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. She is a very prolific author, and luckily for me she writes books of many pages. I’ve gone through the whole series 3 times so far and I’m looking forward to the next time. What I like about her books is that the plot despite being fictious is set in the real historical setting. Her books are well researched, even the details of medical emergencies and procedures are surprisingly accurate. In the past I enjoyed books by Robin Cook, he’s known author of medical thrillers where the current medical or other issues are reflected. My favourite book by him is called Seizure, it mixes politics with medical research and concerns itself with ethics of certain procedures and whether it should be allowed. So, in short, books will never be obsolete to me. In fact, nowadays books are more accessible than ever, I own an e-book reader and have many books available at the tip of my finger. Moreover, tv adaptions while sometimes good, can’t measure up to the original book.

2)

I include last semester writing assignment for Practical language, a review. I ended up choosing the Korean tv series Squid game. I had to talk myself into watching it and although it was very disturbing, I don’t regret it. Nevertheless, I’m afraid I didn’t do it justice, I attempted to relay the oppressive atmosphere of the series, which I think I managed. I, however, didn’t succeed in pinpointing the topics it deals with. True to be told, at the time of the writing I already forgot some of the important thoughts I had watching the tv series. But I just couldn’t make myself to watch it again, at the same time I needed to write about it because it made such an impact.

3) Wife of Bath

During the literature course we were tasked with creating a meme to go with the story called Wife of Bath from Canterbury tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. At first, I felt a little bit lost as I had no inspiration. I read the tale again and came up with a meme referring to Wife of Bath power over her husbands. The accompanying text is an analysis of a scene happening between Wife of Bath and her fifth husband. Unfortunately, I have no feedback on this assignment.

4)

I include also the essay written as this term assignment. As research, I read several articles and studies dealing with PE and sport in schools. As a source I used one of the videos recommended in methodology course. In this assignment, I attempted to be well spoken and logical, concise yet thorough. I included some linking words to make my essay look cohesive and easy to read and understand.

9 Good coherence and cohesion. Avoid using rhetorical questions to keep your tone formal and make a statement instead. Also, try to integrate your sources better into your text (refer to them even if they are videos).

Second semester (2023)

As an example of my writing I include an essay from Practical Language A course. The essay was supposed to be quite short, only 250 words, therefore every word counted and I tried to include as much linking verbs as possible. Nevertheless, I was only partially successful. Thankfully I was still able to get 10 out of 10.

The second artefacts are preparatory notes of an argumentative essay for the course Writing in English. In the end I managed to hand in only part of the text, as it was too long. Nevertheless I think that I did a better job in connecting different parts of the text.
